Digitalisation Roadmap vs. Just Buying Software: Why Sequencing Matters
By Ts. Lukas J. Tan · October 15, 2025
A business can make every individual technology decision correctly — the right CRM, the right accounting system, the right inventory tool — and still end up worse off than if it had planned the sequence properly. Sequencing is the part of digitalisation that's easiest to skip and most expensive to get wrong.
What happens without a roadmap
Systems get bought in the order urgent problems show up, not in the order that actually makes sense architecturally. A CRM gets bought before the customer data model is settled, so it inherits a mess. An inventory system gets bought before the finance system it needs to reconcile against, so the integration becomes an expensive afterthought instead of a planned connection. Each individual purchase might have been the right tool — bought in the wrong order, at the wrong time.
What a roadmap actually does differently
A digitalisation roadmap sequences technology investment based on dependencies, not urgency — deciding what foundational systems and data models need to exist before the systems that depend on them make sense to buy. It also spaces out the change management load on the team, rather than trying to adopt three new systems at once because they all felt urgent simultaneously.
Why this is hard to do informally
Sequencing requires seeing the whole technology landscape at once — which systems depend on which data, which purchases are genuinely urgent versus merely loud, and where the business's actual constraints (budget, team capacity, existing contracts) should shape the order. That's difficult to do well from inside day-to-day operations, where each request tends to get evaluated in isolation rather than against the full picture.
What good sequencing looks like in practice
A 12–24 month roadmap, reviewed and adjusted as circumstances change, that says not just what to invest in but in what order and why — with each phase building on a stable foundation rather than adding another disconnected system to an already fragmented stack.
See Digitalisation Roadmap for how we build this before any individual purchase gets made.
